Our
office specializes in the diagnosis and management of skin, hair, and
nail disorders. This is a sizable task considering the skin is the largest
organ of the body. No one is without skin; consequently, we treat men
and women of myriad backgrounds, and all ages from infants to seniors.
From the
day we enter this world, a number of conditions may afflict the skin.
Eczema is one and can manifest as cradle cap, poison oak, and atopic dermatitis,
among others. We specialize in recognizing the various types of eczema
and distinguishing eczema from other rashes so that appropriate treatment
is rendered.
Acne and
warts are common problems which plague us from early on. While appearing
predominantly in children and young adults, older individuals may suffer
as well. With newer treatments available today, no one should have to
go through life hampered by these maladies.
Growths of
the skin are inevitable throughout life. Benign ones need to be distinguished
from cancerous ones. A trained eye and certain specialized laboratory
tests are many times necessary to make the distinction. If the growth
requires removal, a number of different procedures are available in order
to minimize scarring and achieve maximum cosmetic benefit.
Skin cancer
threatens us all, and that's because the number one cause of skin cancer,
the sun, is everywhere. Basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma,
and melanoma are the most common. Of these, melanoma is the most serious
because it can kill quickly. Any mole that changes or appears different
needs to be evaluated. When melanoma is diagnosed and treated early, it
is entirely curable.
Treatment
for the skin has evolved dramatically over the years. New medications
and techniques are being introduced and refined every year. Propecia is
an example of a treatment for hair loss for which none existed just a
few years ago. Tumescent liposuction is an example of a new technique
pioneered by dermatologists which revolutionized the manner in which liposuction
is performed.
Healthy skin
is the goal for which we strive. It begins with proper protection and
that means being sun smart. Wear your sunscreen and protect your skin
from the damaging effects of the sun. While we can correct many problems
with the skin, the best correction is protection.
