A
fully trained dermatologist has completed a minimum of four years of postgraduate
training after graduating from medical school, including at least three
years of full-time training in an accredited dermatology residency program.
In addition to defining and monitoring the training required to become
a dermatologist, the American Board of Dermatology administers an examination
after the physician completes his or her training. Dermatologists who
pass the examination become certified by the Board.
To
become certified by the American Board of Dermatology, dermatologists
must satisfy the following requirements:
- Education and experience
- Verification of
credentials
- Examination
On becoming Board certified, therefore, dermatologists
have complied with recognized standards of education and training. Board
certified dermatologists have knowledge and specialized experience in
all areas of dermatology, including medical dermatology, surgical dermatology,
and cosmetic dermatology.
